I think most people know of Iconfinder as a good resource for icons to use commercially but I came across Find Icons recently which has similar content but a bit more varied. Worth bookmarking.

Post image above post title

I found quite a simple way to place a post image above a post title today using the post thumbnail feature.

Open functions.php and add the following code:

if ( function_exists( 'add_theme_support' ) )
add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' );

Open index.php and paste

< ?php the_post_thumbnail(); ?>

above the existing line

When you start writing a new post you should now have a ‘featured image’ box under the ‘post tags’ box on the bottom right hand side of the page. Click the ‘set featured image’ link and the flash image uploader will start. Use it as you normally would but then instead of clicking the ‘insert into post’ button, click the ‘use as featured image’ link. Publish your post and the image is now above the title.

You also need to update single.php, category.php and archive.php in the same way.

I’ve been slacking on the posting front a bit. OK, quite a lot. Work has been hectic with deadlines and last minute changes for sites including one of note which seems to have made a positive impression here and across the Atlantic as it was picked up by the Daily Candy. Install plugins problem

Strange problem this morning. I decided to install the database backup plugin only to find WP wouldn’t let me. Nothing radical has changed since the last plugin installation so I turned to google and found countless articles regarding rewriting permissions on the uploads folder, htaccess fixes, contacting host for support etc.

Then I stumbled across Carol’s Vault and took the advice to modify wp_settings.php on line 13 and change WP_MEMORY_LIMIT from 32 MB to 64MB.

Plugin installed and activated.

Hot tub time machine incident

I’m not in the habit of knocking other people’s designs. When someone goes to all the time and trouble of designing and building a site even if it’s not to my taste I usually manage to come up with something positive to say.

A friend sent me a link to a site this morning undecided whether the designer was a genius or as he put it had been in a ‘hot tub time machine related incident’. No image as that would spoil everything.

Install.php?step=2 Error

A few days ago what I thought would be a smooth WP installation came to an abrupt halt when I was hit with an ‘install.php?step=2 Error’. I put it down to the fact that it was ftp related since it was around 6.30 in the evening and the internet connection was slow. So I uploaded all the files again but still had the same problem.

So I did a bit of research and found posts with ‘fatal error’, ‘not enough RAM’, the ever unhelpful ‘see http://wordpress.org’ until I came across this piece of advice: replace the problem url with ‘http://www.domainname.com/wordpressfolder/wp-admin/install.php’.

Worked like a charm.

I later discovered I had a permission issue which hampered the installation.

Treforest Design

I set up a redirect on the old Treforest Design server because I know the design featured in quite a few css galleries and I personally hate it when you follow a link to a website and find it has just disappeared.

In case you are interested, Treforest Design was a part-time venture I did with my friend Roman when time allowed. Sadly, the economic climate amongst other things meant changes all round and we decided to move on to other things. Roman is now working as a university lecturer and I came back to the UK where I’m now employed as a full-time designer by Netrino Bespoke Online Shops.

When I get a moment I will post more screenshots of Treforest V3 and maybe upload some of V2 and V1 if I can find them on my HD.
